Dear Parents and Guardians:

The Fort Ann Central School District recognizes the need to promote a safe environment which fosters learning.  To that end, our District Safety Committee, which works in cooperation with our school safety specialist, police and emergency agencies throughout the community, conducts regular safety meetings, lock down and evacuation drills throughout the year.  These meetings and drills allow us the opportunity to review and analyze our safety procedures.  While it remains our hope that we will never have the need to implement these procedures, pro-active planning and practice is in the best interest of our students, staff and community.

In light of recent tragic events, we offer several suggestions to help parents and guardians begin a dialogue with their children about unsettling information and graphic images that are often displayed in the news.

We suggest that you turn off or limit your child’s exposure to television, more specifically, the news.  If your child asks questions about something that is upsetting them, take their fears seriously, encourage your child to talk about what they are feeling and thinking.  Respond to them in a calm voice and use easy to understand words to let them know that they are safe.  Reassure them that their feelings, fears, and concerns are normal by sharing how you felt when you heard about the event.

Many children will have questions about tragic events.  As caring adults, we can help by making it acceptable to talk about these difficult issues, and by answering children’s questions carefully and honestly.  Many people are concerned that they will say the wrong thing.  The best guide is to keep answers simple, honest, and aimed at the child’s age and developmental level.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding this issue, you may also reach out to our school guidance counselors if you believe your child needs additional support.

Sincerely,

Kevin Froats
